William Makepeace Thackeray: The History of Pendennis. His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy. New York: Harper & Brothers, [1849-50]. First American Edition; eight monthly parts, 8vo, (24.5 cm), in original publisher's printed wraps.

While the front wrappers state, "to be completed in seven numbers," it actually took eight, all of which are present, the volume titles and preliminaries bound in at the end of parts 4 and 8. After no. 5, the part numbers become erratic and have been corrected in ink by an early owner, presumably the same who neatly inscribed his name (Haslett?) on the front wraps. Part 1 lacks its front wrap; all rear wraps are detached and one is missing; one rear wrap with a horizontal tear; some chipping to the edges and spine; text block of no. 4 neatly separated at the spine; wear, toning and occasional creases to the edges of the leaves, intermittent foxing throughout. Hardly flawless, but essentially complete and a remarkable and uncommon survivor.
