Frances Hodgson Burnett: Sara Crewe or What Happened at Miss Minchin's. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1888. FIRST EDITION in book form. Small 4to (21 x 17 cm) bound in period half burgundy morocco and marbled boards; marbled endpapers, page edges gilt; 83 pp. + 16 pp. of publisher's illustrated adverts. Binding with some rubbing to the joints and modest wear to the edges; contents lightly toned as usual. Previous owner's small monogram booklabel ("KLW") on the front paste-down.

With the clipped SIGNATURE OF THE AUTHOR matted and bound in; also bound in are the front cover and spine of the book's original cloth binding. A handsome presentation of Burnett's novel, the source of her perennial classic, The Little Princess. In 1902 Burnett adapted her 1888 novel into a play originally titled A Little Un-fairy Princess. The play proved so successful in London and New York that Scribners urged her to expand it and adapt it into yet another novel, which was published in 1905 as A Little Princess: Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe Now Being Told for the First Time.
