portrait frontispiece and twelve wood-engravings and facsimiles. The
engravings depict rebels whipping a man for expressing Union sentiments,
two executions, and other actions. After being banished from Tennessee
by the Confederate secretary of war, Brownlow returned in 1863 when
Federal forces regained control and was elected governor in1865. Sabin
