Colleagues,

We are pleased to offer:

Malaina. LOGBOOK OF THE AUXILIARY BRIGANTINE YACHT "MALAINA, A LUXURY
VESSEL DESIGNED IN ITALY, BASED AT LONG ISLAND, AND SAILING TO NASSAU,
BERMUDA, GIBRALTAR, VENICE, AND MONFALCONE: Book #2. Written at sea, 2
March to 22 June, 1933. Original manuscript. 130pp. Contains handwritten
times, dates, currents, speeds, winds, courses, and "remarks." This book
gives a comprehensive picture of the technicalities involved in operating a
luxury yacht, capable of crossing the North Atlantic. Voyages are
interspersed with maintenance (described in detail) at ports in Brooklyn,
Glenwood Landing, and Monfalcone. At-sea operations also are carefully
detailed. This log of the 147-foot "Malaina" lists Master Henry Gardner and
a six-member crew along with her tonnage, beam, radio call letters, etc.
Entries begin on March 2, 1933, at Nassau, where she remains for five days
as Mr. & Mrs. Moffett and guests go ashore, back aboard, etc., while the
crew washes the yacht. On one occasion the Moffetts bring aboard the Royal
Governour of Nassau, Sir Bede Edmund Hugh Clifford, and his wife. By March
8, Maliana is docked at the Miami Yacht Club, then sails north to the New
York Yacht Club at Glen Cove, Long Island. A week later, she is in dry dock
for maintenance at Tebo Yacht Basin, Brooklyn. She takes on stores, then
heads around to Glenwood Landing at Hempstead Harbor, where carpenters
build "potato lockers," the master compass is inspected, fresh water is
taken on, the crew is paid, &c., &c. April 21-25, Malaina is sailed to
Hamilton Dock, Bermuda, where one guest boards and another leaves, then
from April 25 to May 10, she sails 2,887 miles to Gibraltar, and refuels.
She then proceeds to Venice, arriving May 19, two passengers disembark, and
she moves to Monfalcone Shipyard where 27 days are spent in sand blasting,
sealing, painting, varnishing, cementing, pipe fittings, removing tile from
the galley, etc. On June 17, she returns to Venice where she is scrubbed,
her brass is cleaned, &c. Bound in cloth-backed boards. Cover title,
printed and accomplished by hand. On June 22, the "guests" leave Malaina in
a gondola, and the log ends with a two-page summary of her voyages. 11.5" x
8.75" Very Good. .
The Auxiliary Brigantine Yacht "Malaina" was a luxury vessel, designed by
Henry J. Gielow and built in Lussinpriccolo, Italy, by Marco U. Martinolich
in 1928. Steel and teak were used to construct the yacht, which included
four double cabins, a library, and a sitting room. First named the
"Illyria," she was rechristened "Lalaina" by 1933, and then in the 1940s
was renamed the "Madalan." In 1943, she was assigned to the US Coast
Guard's 3rd District, stationed at Greenport and Fort Tilden, New York, and
used for training purposes. She was decommissioned in June, 1945. Bought in
1946 by Bostonians John Pontes and his partner, she was next used to carry
cargo and passengers to and from Cape Verde, then owned by Portugal. Most
of her passengers were seasonal cranberry pickers who worked on Cape Cod.
By 1948, a pen for livestock had been built under the forecastle of this
luxury yacht. In 1955, having been sold to Antonio Bento, who neglected
her, the yacht broke loose in the harbor of Praia and hit the rocks, She
later sank, unattended. $450.00
