Montaigne's essays were first translated into English in 1603 by John Florio. Our set is the second edition of the Charles Cotton translation which first appeared in 1685-86. Our first and third volumes make no mention of an earlier printing, but our second volume, also printed in 1693, states that it is "The Second Edition." Wing M240 (Vols. I & III) and Wing M2480A (Vol. II).
