Metropolitan District Railway:
The “District Railway” Map of London (6th edition)
        London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co., , 1898. Lithographed in 
colors, laid on linen as issued, folding into pictorial card covers. The 
District Railway was one of the earliest underground lines: the stretch 
of track from South Kensington to Westminster was opened in 1868. The 
District company's lines are shown in red, all other railways are shown 
in blue, and railways proposed or under construction and omnibus 
connections are also indicated. The railways are superimposed on a 
detailed street plan of London extending to Ealing in the west, with an 
inset of Putney Bridge and Wimbledon. The covers are illustrated with 
views of local landmarks, suggestive of leisure travel, but on both 
covers a train is shown emerging from a tunnel beneath the legend ?'time 
is money?' - a reminder that traveling below London's congested streets 
could benefit the Victorian commuter. Hyde: One fold line is split. Hard 
cover and map good condition only.   $100.00 ppd.
