Bass, Edward Alpheus., M.D. PHYSICIAN'S HANDWRITTEN MEMORANDUM BOOK:
Markesan, Wisconsin, 1884-1894. Original manuscript. Extensive handwritten
notes, entered into "The Physician's Memorandum Book, Arranged by Joel A.
Miner."  20pp of printed matter precede approximately 130pp of closely
written memoranda in a readable hand; some entries are light but
discernible. Records medical treatments and amounts charged as well as
extensive notes on patient care and a record of expenses. Dr. Bass wrote
his name and address twice on the front endpapers. Wallet-style binding of
calf; upper spine end worn from use.  6.5" x 4" Good . Full Calf.
Dr. Bass (1860-1916), descended from an old Vermont family, was born in
Cedar County, Iowa. After medical school at the Bennett College of Eclectic
Medicine and Surgery in Chicago, Dr. Bass set up practice in Burnett
Junction, Wisconsin, then moved to Montello in 1887, etc., etc. [For more
biography, see Wisconsin Historical Society records.]  Here are some of the
hundreds of entries: Mrs. Keyes, extracting tooth, 50 [cents]; Mr. Sund,
hyperdermic treatment, 50 [cents]; Mr. Bucher, for Will, one visit and
medicine, 1.00; Livery Account [re use of carriages, &c.]; many entries
recount the delivery of male and female babies, including frequent night
calls; "2:30-7 a.m - Female - a peculiar one - first called May 4th as the
labor was on...partially dilated...rapidly and severe...child born at
4:20..."; "3 p.m. to 9 a.m. - case while in Germania continued all
night...progress...and finally about five o'clock I for my forceps, had
them in moments, had a baby nicely"; expense ledger has dozens of entries
for medical supplies, drugs, and personal items; Obstetrical Record
contains about 14 pages of closely written case notes; income and expense
ledgers include many names of local residents; &c.   $250.00
