Harry B. Smith: Stage Lyrics. With Illustrations by Archie Gunn, Ray Brown and F.W. Kemble. And with Forty-two Character Portraits of Stage Favorites. New York: R.H. Russell, 1900. FIRST EDITION. Tall 8vo (22.5 cm) in original publisher's illustrated cloth; 157 pp.; illustrated.

With the bookplate of Gus Kahn (1886-1941), renowned Broadway and Hollywood lyricist and member of the Songwriters' Hall of Fame. Active in the 1920s and 30s, Cahn wrote some of the most iconic songs of the era: Ain't We Got Fun?, Toot Toot Tootsie, I'll See You in My Dreams, It Had to Be You, Yes Sir, That's My Baby, Makin' Whoopee, etc. He also wrote songs for many films, including the Marx Brothers' A Day at the Races and Ziegfeld Girl.

A fitting provenance for this well-illustrated collection of lyrics from vaudeville, minstrel shows and early Broadway. Binding rather sunned and browned, damp-stain to spine foot and top edge of rear board; contents clean and bright.
