First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, original 
green cloth titled in orange and dark green on 
spine panel, decorations in dark green on front & 
rear covers. 147 pp. Illustrated throughout. 
Signed and dated in ink by the author on the 
front free endpaper "Pierre Berton / November 
16/1961". A fine copy in a very nearly fine dust 
jacket with only the faintest hint of rubbing at 
the extremities. A bright, clean, unread copy of 
a book which rarely shows up in fine condition.

¶ One of the great classics of 20th century 
Canadian Children's Books, a heartwarming fantasy 
novel of an underground world. The first edition 
is pretty scarce, and this is the only copy I 
have ever encountered that was inscribed by the 
author in the year of publication.
