Edition in the original cloth. Presentation copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED: 
"W. H. Burleigh/with the regards/of the Author/August 1859." A Johnson 
High Spot and an uncommon presentation copy. Curtis, editor of HARPER'S 
WEEKLY during the Civil War years and one of the most influential 
American journalists of any day, also was known for his speeches, one of 
which was a tribute to Sumner. Curtis also had the honor of helping 
Thoreau build his cabin on Walden Pond. Small leather bookplate of 
collector Arthur Wilmer Lissauer on front pastedown. Occasional foxing, 
stain. Old repairs to spine tips with loss of cloth at two spots on the
