1851 Artists' Union of Cincinnati Secretary Certificate.

A handsome certificate declaring that Caleb C. Thomas is appointed 
Honorary Secretary of the Union, and that "his receipts in that capacity 
will be duly honored by the Treasurer". The Artists Union of Cincinnati 
was a short-lived organization dedicated to promoting the fine arts and 
its' artist-members and their work through the sale of annual 
subscriptions and the lottery distribution of artworks each year to 
subscribers. It was founded in March, 1851 to replace the defunct 
Western Art Union, and held an exhibition two months later in Melodeon 
Hall. Members also received a subscription to The Artists Journal. The 
first painting distribution was held in January, 1852, and the Union 
counted 1,335 subscribing members. Another painting distribution as held 
in January, 1853 at which time there were 935 members, and after that 
the Union more or less drops from sight.

Standard courtesies to institutions and the trade; Postage charges are 
$5.00 for the first book, and $2.00 for each additional book. Shipments 
outside the U.S. will be billed at cost. We accept returns if we are 
notified within ten days of your receipt of the books-please ask for 
full instructions and terms. Massachusetts residents must add 6.25% 
state sales tax.
