Pierce Egan; Robert and George Cruikshank, illus.: Life in London; or the Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, Esq. and his elegant Friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis. . . . Embellished with Thirty-Six Scenes from Real Life, Designed and Etched by I. R. & G. Cruikshank. London: Printed for Sherwood, Jones, and Co., 1821. First edition, later [third?] issue: footnote present on p. 9; first sheet of music is numbered. Tall 8vo (26 cm), untrimmed in original publisher's illustrated boards, rebacked preserving much of the original spine, slipcase; xvi, 376, [16] pp.; hand-colored engraved title plus 35 hand-colored aquatint plates (complete), 3 folding engraved plates of music printed recto and verso, in-text woodcuts; publisher's catalog and adverts bound in at the end. Abbey: Life, 281; Tooley 196; Cohn 262.

A cornerstone of the Golden Age of English color plate books as well as a true publishing phenomenon, this lively tour of late-Georgian urban life spawned countless imitations, dramatizations, plagiarisms, sequels and spin-offs. Boards somewhat darkened and rubbed, light soiling, corners bumped; mild foxing to the title-page and frontispiece, a few stray spots elsewhere, else exceptionally clean, fresh and bright, with wide untrimmed margins as issued. A handsome, just about Fine copy in the very uncommon original pictorial boards.
