1850s Hand-Lettered, Fancy Embossed and Appliquéd Joseph Mansell
Valentine's Day Card.

An attractive embossed and Appliqued Valentine's Day card with a
hand-lettered sentiment- "What though my dearest Valentine - No outward
sign of love be mine - deep in my fond and glowing soul - It reigns and
rules without control". Joseph Mansell manufactured embossed and laced
papers, and was known, from the 1840s to the 1870s, for his Christmas
and Valentines cards and card-blanks, such as this one, based on
embossed paper often decorated with colored appliqués. His cards were
exhibited at the London exhibitions in 1851 and 1862 and at the 1855
Paris exhibition.

Embossed and appliqued card, with the name 'Mansell' embossed at the
bottom, 7.5"x9.5", some soil and light wear. [42334] $85
