4to.  12 x 9 inches.  33 pp.  1 plate with a facsimile of Comerford’s diary page 9, colophon printed in black in Japanese, with 3 character hand-written in red ink; text clean, unmarked.  Red paper over boards, printed paper spine label, dust-jacket with printed paper label on front panel;  binding square and tight, dust jacket has shelf wear and  2-inch tear at top edge of front panel, bottom edge roughed up a bit.  Very Good.

LIMITED EDITION of 100 copies printed by the Kawahita Printing Company, Kyoto, Japan, printed on hand-made Japanese Washi paper with the number of the edition hand-written in red Japanese characters on the colophon.  John T. Comerford, Irish-born English surgeon, was stationed on the HMS Beacon during 1864-1865.  His journal contains the primary account of the British navel bombardment of Shimonoseki, and the strong resistance of the Japanese defenders armed with bows and arrows against ship-board cannon.  Also includes a fascinating description of Japanese customs and dress.
