Mark Hopkins. American Educator, Theologian. Autographed Letter Signed, 
Als. Williams College, July 19, 1846  Two pages  (Approx. 8" x 10") on 
blue stationary. Very good. Written to an unnamed recipient, (John 
Tatlock). Hopkins is asking him to join the Faculty as Professor of 
Mathematics for the next term. The salary is $800 but could be higher. 
Research showed that the recipient was Tatlock, who had held the 
position until the prior year and is now teaching at "Marietta". Boldly 
signed by Hopkins. John Tatlock had taught at Williams from 1838 t0 
1845, he was replaced by John Darby. Tatlock would accept this position 
and taught at Williams until 1867.

Mark Hopkins (February 4, 1802 -- June 17, 1887) was an American 
educator and Congregationalist theologian, president of Williams College 
from 1836 to 1872. An epigram - widely attributed to President James A. 
Garfield, a student of Hopkins - defined an ideal college as "Mark 
Hopkins on one end of a log and a student on the other".
