BAUM, L. Frank. THE SEA FAIRIES. Illustrated by John R. Neill.

Toronto: The Copp Clark Co., Limited. 1911 First 
Canadian Edition. Octavo, original greenish-gray 
cloth stamped in blue and red, pictorial paper 
label on front panel, pictorial endpapers. 
Frontispiece and eleven additional full-page 
tipped-in colour plates, along with numerous 
line-drawings in the text, all by John R. Neil. 
Bound from the sheets of the US edition with new 
preliminaries; the sheets are of the first issue 
with the last 2 lines transposed on p.95 & and 
lines 14 & 15 transposed on p. 105. About a good 
copy (i.e, not very good), with all the plates 
complete. The binding is a bit shaken and worn, 
inner front hinge neatly repaired, a few of the 
black & white drawings are hand-coloured, some 
minor internal staining and edge-tears. A decent 
enough example of a very scarce edition - the 
Copp Clarke issues of the L. Frank Baum books 
were issued in very tiny print runs.

¶ The first volume in a new series for children, 
initiated by Baum in order to replace the Oz 
books. It was followed by Sky Island in 1912.
