Emory, William H. NOTES OF A MILITARY RECONNAISSANCE From Fort Leavenworth, in Missouri, to San Diego, in California, Including Parts of the Arkansas, Del Norte, and Gila Rivers. Washington: Wendell and Van Benthuysen. 1848. 8vo. 614pp. [the larger House issue]. Illustrated with 2 folding maps, 64 plates, and 3 military plans (sometimes referred to as maps). This copy lacks the large map, which was not included in all copies. Orig. cloth, with paper spine label. A few chips on the spine, and a small loss to the label, but overall a nice copy. The largest of the two maps present, "Map of the Territory of New Mexico," with a neatly repaired tear.    $850.00 (trade discount allowed)
At the top of the title page: "Thirtieth Congress - First Session. Ex. Doc. No. 41." The Emory report is a key source for our knowledge of the Southwest, opened up to Americans after the Mexican-American War. "A library of Western Americana is incomplete without it" (ZAMORANO 80 #33). Wagner-Camp 148:7.
