Ceylon. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 50 VERNACULAR IMAGES TAKEN ON A SEA VOYAGE FROM
ENGLAND TO CEYLON, AND ON TO AUSTRALIA, IN 1904. . Original photograph

leaves of card-stock, four per page, plus two mounted on the rear
pastedown. All are captioned in ink. On the front pastedown is written:
"Voyage from England to Australia, January & February, 1904" and in the
lower corner "To Howard/ from Ethel & Willie / June 28th, 1904." Housed in
a blue-cloth photo album with decorated borders and "Kodak" gilt-stamped on
the cover. 8.25" x 10"
Very Good.
The first 19 photographs were taken aboard the "Oraya" (a passenger ship
sailing from England to Australia since the 1880s). Included are views of
Naples, Pompeii and Stromboli as well as the streets of Egypt's Port Said,
showing inhabitants such as "our dragoman." Also seen is a Japanese
battleship "ready to start for the east" from Port Said harbor. ~~ The next
stop is Ceylon (Sri Lanka), shown in 29 photographs. In Colombo, the
photographer shoots 5 pictures including “Mr. Harwood’s bungalow”, street
scenes showing the inhabitants, an “up country village” nearby, and himself
as “I return from work” in a rickshaw. The next Ceylonese cities visited
are Kandy and Peradeniya, where views include the Temple of the Tooth (a
relic of Buddha), and snaps in the jungle nearby, including “Ethel and Mrs.
Willis” on a mountain road to the city, and lake and river scenes. There
are 9 shots of elephants, including “a fine tusker," Ethel feeding an
elephant a banana (2 photos), an elephant lifting a man to ride atop its
back (2 shots), an elephant scratching itself with its hind leg, and two
shots of elephants bathing in the river (one of “blowing bubbles under the
surface”.) Next stop is the Cocoa Islands, where we see the group, wearing
topees, getting into a beached “outrigger” canoe. There is also a
photograph of “a gale in the tropics.” The final two images show a couple
on shipboard and “our first glimpse of Australia/ Fremantle from the wharf.”
