Gottfried, Johann Ludwig.  NEWE WELT UND AMERICANISCHE HISTORIEN... Frankfurt: Bey denen Merianischen [M. Merian] Erben. 1655. Folio. (8),661,(3)pp. With the added engraved title, "Historia Antipodum Oder Newe Welt...", mounted. Text with 174 fine copper engravings originally appearing in De Bry's German edition of "America." This copy lacks the 5 folding maps. Nicely bound in 19th century straight grained red morocco, gilt spine, with black morocco label, signed by Zaehnsdorf. Hinges and spine a bit rubbed, but a quite attractive copy. There are 2 leaves (K6 and L1) supplied from another copy, and there is a neat repaired tear at the bottom of leaf M3 (minor).                        $3,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
The second edition of a wonderfully illustrated history of the earliest Western exposures to the native people of the New World, as recorded by Acosta, Oviedo, Peter Martyr, Hans Staden, Herrera, de Laet, etc.  The text is an abridgement of parts 1-12 of Johann Theodor de Bry's "America" and a reissue of part 14 of the same work. The authorship had previously been attributed to Johann Philipp Abelin, as recorded by Sabin, etc. This copy is the issue reading, "Flecken und Wohnplatzen." on the title page. See European Americana 655/74. Sabin 50, JCB II:443. Note: the only complete copy (with the 5 maps) currently for sale is offered at $23,000.
