Colorado, &c. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, DOCUMENTING A 1907 TRIP THROUGH
MID-ATLANTIC AND WESTERN STATES, PENNSYLVANIA TO CALIFORNIA, AND A SOJOURN
INTO CANADA. , 1907. Original album. Written on the front free-endpaper in
pencil, "148 Scenes--Kodak" [we count 137]. Most of the photographs measure
6" x 3.25", have inked captions in the bottom margins, and are mounted to
88 leaves of heavy black stock. These are high-quality snapshots taken on
what appears to be a sweeping trip by a small group of men and women
through the U.S. and Canada. There is much emphasis on shots of monuments
(many Civil War) and river scenes (some also showing various boats/ships),
some city street scenes, and scenery featuring railroad lines and views.
Several photos show the group (usually two women and two or three men; and
in two shots, a child) posed in front of the views. The album, once
leather-covered boards, is stripped to the boards, otherwise tight and
internally clean. 9.5" x 6.25" Very Good.
US states visited include Colorado (Pike’s Peak, Garden of the Gods, Royal
Gorge); Tennessee (Lookout Mountain, including the “Incline Railway”,
Chattanooga (Civil War sites, Orchard Knob cemetery), Missionary Ridge,
Deep Valley on the Cumberland River; Virginia (Old Point Comfort and
Hampton Roads, including the harbor and ferryboats and Hotel Chamberlin and
the French ship “Victor Hugo” in port, Jamestown and Jamestown River
scenes, Richmond (home of R.E. Lee and Winnie Davis, “site of Libby
prison”, state house, various monuments); Iowa (Des Moines’ soldiers
monument and state house); Ohio (“the square in Cincinnati”); Pennsylvania
(Philadelphia’s Independence Hall); New York (NYC: the Battery, Brooklyn
Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, Sunken Island in the East River);

“on the way to Plymouth”); Minnesota (St. Paul’s “Seven Corners” and
Minnehaha Falls); and California (San Francisco: Van Ness Ave., Market
Street scenes, Catalina). ~~ Canada photographs include: Quebec (street
scene in Lower Town, Dufferin Terrace and Chateau Frontenac, a “caleche” on
the street, the “ship of the Duke of Abruzzi at Quebec, 1907”, Ile
St.Louis); Montreal (Lachine Rapids, Grand Trunk Bridge); Toronto (street
scene); Niagara Falls (many of both the Canadian and U.S. sides, including
view of street parade in “Niagara Falls, NY”, views on Maid of the Mist,
