[Rarebooks] FS: A Letter by John Steinbeck to the Friends of Democracy. 1940. Rare Limited Edition with glassine jacket

We are pleased to offer a rare privately printed and distributed book from
the personal library of departed colleague Lucien Goldschmidt:

John Steinbeck, A Letter written in reply to a request for a statement
about his ancestry, Together with the letter originally submitted by the
Friends of Democracy. Stamford, CT: Overbrook Press, 1940 (September 1940)
One of 350 hardcover copies (second issue after "John Steinbeck replies,"
single sheet folded into four pages, printed earlier same year). 8 1/4" x
5 1/2". 13 unnumbered pages. Brown ruled paper-covered boards
(papermaker's blind stamp visible at bottom front; mottling one sees in
photos of front cover ingrained in paper, not staining) with paper label
printed in red and black. Title page printed in red and black.  Near Fine
(tiniest bumps at corners; paper edge of contents lightly creased, or
thumbed; boards are very slightly askew--book binder's fault) with Near
Fine glassine dust cover (one inch closed tear bottom rear corner with
narrow crease; small pea-sized hole at middle spine; tanned with age)
Contents very slightly age-toned. Clean. No inscriptions or markings.

33 major libraries record the limited edition on WorldCat, 27 list the 4
pp. paper folder. Goldstone A13b.
