Pierre de Nolhac: Francois Boucher: Premier Peintre du Roi 1703-1770. Paris: Goupil & Cie., 1907. FIRST EDITION; one of five hundred numbered copies printed on Rives paper (this being no. 90). Folio (33 cm) in full period navy blue crushed morocco by Durvand, the covers, spine, and turn-ins elaborately decorated in gilt; top page edges gilt, the rest untrimmed; marbled endpapers; [4], 175, [3] pp.; frontispiece portrait, plates and vignettes with tissue-guards. Original publisher's printed wraps (front and rear covers and spine) bound in.

Massive, handsomely printed survey of Boucher's life and work, with 60 splendid plates and vignettes, most printed in sepia, several in color. The latter part of the volume is devoted to Georges Pannier's "Catalogue des oeuvres peintes de Francois Boucher qui ont passe en vente publique depuis 1770 jusqu'en 1906." The somewhat worn but still impressive belle epoque style binding is by Lucien Durvand (1852-1924), founding member of the Syndicat des patrons-relieurs and a celebrated French binder of the period. Boards with areas of rubbing and light scuffing, wear to the edges and corners; front joint/hinge professionally repaired; spine a bit sunned and rubbed with repaired loss to the crown; contents with toning to the untrimmed edges of the leaves, else very clean, the plates crisp and fresh. Front paste-down with the engraved bookplate of Sterling Postley.
