Roosevelt, Theodore. THE WINNING OF THE WEST: Daniel Boone Edition. NY:
G.P. Putnam's Sons, Knickerbocker Press, 1900. Limited Edition. Four thick
volumes. Complete with five folding maps, 102 plates, rubricated
title-pages and decorative half-titles. Laid in is the publisher's printed
slip regarding the care of books. Tipped in opposite the limitation notice
is a leaf of heavily annotated, original manuscript from TR's original
manuscript of his chapter on St. Clair's 1791 defeat, beginning: "...days
of Scandinavian supremacy at sea resulted in no spread of the Scandinavian
tongue or culture..." and ending "Even a strong race, in its prime, and
given the...." Bound in 3/4 morocco and marbled boards, marbled endpapers,
top edges gilt, other edges rough-trimmed. The front joint of Volume 4 has
been expertly, and imperceptibly, restored. Scattered foxing to text pages,
otherwise a nice, tight set with clean plates, 10.25" x 6.75" Very Good.
This edition is limited to 200 copies of which this is #116 with the leaf
