SECOND EDITION. Ida Tarbell's _The History of the Standard Oil Company_
was first serialized in _McClure's Magazine_ in 19 parts from 1902 to
1904. The magazine series was the first corporate coverage of its kind,
and, along with work by Lincoln Steffens and Ray Stannard Baker, created
the genre of muckraking journalism. The two volume First Edition of this
work appeared in 1905. In 1911, the Supreme Court of the United States
found that the Standard Oil Company violated the Sherman Antitrust Act,
and broke up the Standard Oil Company, in part due to the information
revealed by Tarbell. In 1999 New York University published a list of the
top 100 works of twentieth-century American journalism; Tarbell's work
is listed as number 5.
