Charles Knight, ed.: Knight's Quarterly Magazine. Volume I [no. 1 - Volume III no. 1]. London: Printed for Charles Knight and Co., 1823-1824. First edition. Five consecutive numbers/issues bound in three volumes, 8vo (21.5 cm), 1/4 burgundy morocco lettered in gilt; 457, 472, 328 pp.

The first five issues of this literary magazine that only ran to seven issues in total. A lively collection of poetry, essays, dialogues, reviews and collegiate jeux d'esprit. The contributors included the young Thomas Babington Macaulay, W. M. Praed, H. N. Coleridge, Derwent Coleridge, all Cambridge undergraduates at the time, and others, including Thomas De Quincey. Though short-lived, the magazine made a name for its editor, Charles Knight, who went on to become one of the most prominent English publishers and editors of the nineteenth century.

Bindings with a little sunning and edge-wear; vol. I cracked at the gutter after the title-page but secure; vol. III bound without the volume title; occasional toning and spotting to the leaves, but generally very clean and crisp, firmly bound. The contributors wrote under pseudonyms and an early owner has helpfully identified some of these with a hand-written "key" on one of the contents pages (e.g. "Tristram Merton = T.B. Macaulay").
