The Sportsman's Magazine; or, Chronicle of Games and Pastimes. London: Hodgson & Co., 1823-25. A large collection of broken volumes, parts, plates, and bits & pieces (with many duplicates) of this rare, short-lived periodcal which lasted for only 18 issues, or three volumes. The Sportsman's Magazine, as its title suggests, was dedicated to all things sporting — pugilism, horse racing, fox-hunting, shooting, cricket, angling, "the golf," rowing, sailing, ratting, cockfighting, hawking, wrestling, archery, "pedestrianism", etc.

The lot consists of: BOUND VOLUMES (some leather), none of which are wholly complete in themselves, MONTHLY PARTS IN WRAPPERS (all or most imperfect/incomplete), BROKEN OR DISBOUND VOLUMES or partial volumes, and many loose DUPLICATE PLATES & PAGE-GATHERINGS from all three volumes. Condition varies. An attempt was made at one point to organize and list the various elements comprising the lot (as can be seen by the labels in the photos). A copy of the list will be included, in the hopes that it will help the buyer use the bits & pieces to make up some complete or near-complete volumes, if so desired. Could be a fun summer project. In any event, it's a large collection of colorful articles and plates relating to the sporting world of Regency England.

The PLATES include portraits of pugilists Tom Cribb, John Jackson, Josh. Hudson, etc.; Emma Freeman, the celebrated Female Pedestrian; Isaak Walton and Charles Cotton; The Dog Billy "winning the Match of Killing One Hundred Rats in Six Minutes" (hand-colored) ; View of the Otter Hunt at Ewton, in Devonshire; Lord Pelham's perilous Situation while Coursing near Porto Bello Gap, Sussex; View of the Contest for Dogget's Coat and Badge, on the First of August, 1823 (folding); etc., etc. All or most of the plates with numerous duplicates in the various bound volumes or disbound sections and/or in the packet of 30+ loose plates also included.

The CONTENTS include monthly or semi-monthly sections on pugilism (the Slaughtering Fight between the Bath Tinman and Stevens, etc.), cricket matches, horse racing, coursing, cocking, angling, the turf, Aquatic Sports, Pedestrianism, Archery, etc.; biographies; songs, anecdotes; and much more, including a 5-page "Table of the Fish Usually Angled for in the Waters of Great Britain; With the Places, Seasons, Time of Day, Depth from the Ground, and Baits suited to their Habits" and an unusual early description of "The Golf" ("an amusement said to be peculiar to Scotland...").
