(JAPAN) [Tomkinson, Michael]. HOKUSAI, Master of the Japanese Ukiyo-ye School of Painting. No place (Kidderminster, Franche Hall, England): Privately Printed (for the author). No date (1904). Lg. 4to. (6)pp. of preliminary text, plus 6 hand colored plates, reproducing woodblock prints of Hokusai. Title printed in red & black. Introductory biographical sketch of Hokusai signed in ink by Tomkinson. Orig. half red morocco over red linen, "Hokusai" stamped on the cover. Spine rubbed, and with chips at the top & bottom,  but perfectly sound. Laid into this copy is a single printed sheet, "Mr. Tomkinson's 'Gossip on Japan' Reprinted from 'The Kidderminster News,' December 10th, 1903."    $200.00 (trade discount allowed)
Tomkinson (1841-1921) was a wealthy British carpet manufacturer and Japanese art collector who wrote a number of books on the subject. Probably printed in an edition of 100 copies?
