Mao Zedong. GREAT PROLETARIAN CULTURAL REVOLUTION POSTER: "PORTRAITS OF
DEMONS" aka "PICTURES OF GHOSTS" Tianjin, Hebei Province, China: Tianjin
Physical Sports Commune, 1967. First Edition. Large broadside, printed in
red and blue on white stock, featuring 18 illustrations from photographs,
text in Jilu Mandarin characters. 31" x 21" [NB: The darker portion seen at
top and left margins is only a photographic shadow; the paper is uniformly
white.] Fine condition.
This relic of Chairman Mao and the Cultural Revolution documents the attack
of the Anti-Revolutionary Revisionist Clique of the Physical Sports System
of Hebei Province. Printed in 1967 by the Tianjin Physical Sports
Committee, the "Ghost Poster" was intended to be pasted on walls as a
warning to others who might stray from Party lines. The text begins with a
quotation from Mao Zedong, titled "Highest Instructions: The Imperialists
and Reactionaries in this Country will not settle with their failures but
will keep trying. Even after National Liberation they still continue all
varieties of destructive efforts in an attempt to regain power. So it is
unquestionable: we must not loosen our vigilance. The enemies will not
disappear by themselves no matter how the Chinese react to invading
American Imperialists" [reference to the Vietnam War then being fought]. ~~
Most of these posters were destroyed soon after the Cultural Revolution
ended. This ephemeral survivor shows how government workers were punished
for "improper activities" and crushed by Cultural Revolutionary forces.
