[William Heath:] Coming Out of Church. London: Thomas McLean, [ca. 1825-30]. Hand-colored etching, 14 1/4 x 9 7/8 in. Trimmed and mounted on paper backing; some very light cockling, one or two small spots, else clean and crisp, boldly colored. Heath's signature figure of "Paul Pry" has been almost completely trimmed off at the lower-left corner, imprint at bottom: "Pub by T McLean 26 Haymarket where political and other Caricatuers[sic] are daily Pub[lished]."
A satire on an act moved in parliament by Robert Peel to provide for the better collection and application of voluntary contributions for enlarging and building churches and chapels. "Two bishops make a barrier across a church doorway by holding out between them a collecting-plate. They lean against the flanking pillars, extending their legs obstructively across the pavement. The one on the left, tall, slim, aquiline, and arrogant, is probably Manners-Sutton; the other, paunchy, drink-blotched, and scowling is probably intended for Howley. A fat John Bull in top-boots in the doorway between them, his hands plunged in his breeches-pockets, finding the plate held across his chest, says with an angry scowl: 'Dang it this be as bad as getting into Chancery[.] if you make one pay to get in you might Let one Out for Nothing'. Behind him the congregation, ladies' huge hats being conspicuous, approach the door. On the left pillar is a notice headed Easter Dues; on the right are two others headed Notice Poors Rate and Church Rates. A large bill is headed (Copy) G. R— and signed R Peel." BM Satires 15536.

[William Heath:] Does the Harp of Rosa Slumber. "Sleep, gentle sleep. — Nature's soft nurse— London: Thomas McLean, [ca. 1829]. Hand-colored etching, 9 3/4 x 14 1/4 in. Trimmed and mounted on paper backing; some very light cockling. Heath's signature figure of "Paul Pry" (clipped) in the lower-left corner, imprint at bottom: "Pub. by T. McLean 26 Haymarket Lond." BM Satires (undescribed).
A striking image of an old, indigent (Irish?) woman sleeping in a doorway. Clean and boldly colored.
