Milton, John. PARADISE LOST, A Poem in Twelve Books. The Seventh Edition,
with Notes of various Authors, by Thomas Newton, D.D. London: Printed for
J. Beecroft, W. Strahan [et al], 1770. Seventh Edition. Two volumes. Vol I
-- pp: (xxi), lxxxvi Life of Milton, (ii) Samuel Barrow poem in Latin,
(iii) Andrew Marvel poem, (xx) Addison's Critique, 510; engraved portrait
and five plates. Vol II -- 463, (181) indices, (1) publisher's advert; five
engraved plates.. Bound in old calf, red leather labels, gllt lettering and
rules, raised bands, edges of boards tooled; spine ends chipped, traces of
foxing, still a tight set with all the plates. 8" x 5"  Very Good condition.
Provenance: Mounted inside the cover of Volume I is a handwritten slip,
"This book was adjudged to Samuel Auchmuty, Jun'r. as a reward for his
Literary Merit, by the governors of King's College, December 23, 1771."
Samuel Auchmuty (1756-1822) was to become a British Army Lieutenant General
and Commander in Chief, Ireland. King's College, where this set of Milton
was presented to Auchmuty, would become Columbia University. He was
graduated from there in 1775, served in the loyalist army during the
American Revolution, &c.   $450.00
