[Philippe Louis Joly:] Remarques Critiques sur le Dictionnaire de Bayle. Premiere partie [&] Seconde partie. Paris: Ganeau/Dijon: Francois Desventes, 1752, 1748. Two volumes bound in one. Tall folio (41.5 cm; 16 3/8 in.) in period marbled calf, gilt-tooled spine compartments and morocco spine label, marbled endpapers; [iii]-liv, xxii, [2], 819, [1] pp.; woodcut vignettes, borders and initials.

A commentary on Pierre Bayle's monumental Dictionnaire Historique et Critique. "This anonymous folio volume was written by Le Sieur Joly, a canon of Dijon, and is full of curious researches... here I found some original anecdotes of Hobbes... during that philosopher's residence at Paris" (Isaac D'Israeli, Curiosities of Literature). Bound without the half-title pages; bumping/wear to the corners, light rubbing and sunning to the boards; intermittent mostly light toning to the leaves, a few occasional small spots, but generally very clean and fresh, securely bound. A handsome copy, bound in a style similar to a complete set of Bayle's Dictionnaire which we are also offering this week.
