First edition thus. Four volumes, 8vo (20.5 cm), bound in green morocco by Riss & Saucet of Moscow, gilt-tooled borders and turn-ins, all page edges gilt, silk endpapers; with the half-titles, portrait frontispiece and 8 engraved plates (complete).

Cohen-De Ricci mentions only a later issue of this handsomely printed edition (1796), though the collation appears to be the same. The sometimes strikingly "moderne" plates are engraved after designs by Fragonard fils. Bindings with light edge-wear, occasional rubbing and scuffing, spines a bit rubbed/darkened; a few leaves in vol. I with their corners bent, one plate with a small stain, very occasional traces of faint browning/foxing, otherwise the contents are exceptionally clean and bright. Small engraved circular bookplates of Gustave Chancel (1876) in each volume; front paste-down of vol. I with the original binder's label ("Riss & Saucet a Moscou") and the armorial bookplate of Ross Ambler Curran, early twentieth-century West Coast society figure and bibliophile.
