Clement I, Pope ("Clement of Rome"). OPERA Quae ad Hunc Usque Diem Extare Comperta Sunt... Rufino Torano... Interprete. Paris: Apud Joannem Roigny (excudebat Carola Guillard). 1544. Folio. ff.(8),195,(1). With the final blank. Title page with a large woodcut device illustrating a printing press, with three workmen. Numerous large woodcut initials. Completely rubricated in red & blue, including coloring of all the large initial letters. BOUND WITH: Justin Martyr, Saint. OPERA OMNIA... Joachimo Perionio... Interprete... Paris: Jacobum Dupuys. 1554. Folio. 6 parts in 1, each with its own title page, each with the large woodcut device of Dupuys. With the 3 blank leaves, as called for. The two works bound in 17th century mottled calf, spine ornately gilt in 7 compartments. Spine label. Extremities a bit rubbed, but a very sound copy.                        $2,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
I: At the top of the title page in a contemporary hand "Ad usum Capucinorum Conventus Bisuntini" (i.e., Besancon, France). The first edition of the first collected works of Clement I, Pope, the first of the "Apostolic Fathers." This Latin translation by Rufinus Toranus appeared before the original Greek. A beautifully printed work, by Charlotte Guillard, 1485-1557, the first woman printer of importance. The "Apostolic Constitutions" text of Clement are printed in Greek & Latin. This edition was edited by Joannes Sichardus. Adams C2114; BL French STC, Supplement p. 24.
II: Also with the manuscript heading on the title page "Ad usum Capucinorum Conventus Bisuntini." The first edition in Latin of the works of Saint Justin Martyr, 2nd century Church Father. The Greek "editio princeps" was printed by Robert Estienne in 1551. The 1554 Latin edition is translated and edited by Joachim Perion (1499-1559). Adams J495; BL French STC, p. 247.
