Samuel J. Tilden (American Politician). Autograph Document Signed, Ads: 
"Samuel J. Tilden", as Governor of the State of New York, April 3, 1876; 
Albany NY; One page partially printed document measuring, 10.75" x 16";  
It is counter signed by the Secretary of State John Bigelow with the 
State Seal at bottom left. Overall very good, two closed tears at side 
edges and two at top and bottom that have been repaired with archival 
document repair tape on the verso;

This document is the appointment of Jerome S. Anderson of Stonington 
Ct., as a "Commissioner Of The State Of New York, to take the proof and 
acknowledgment of deeds and other instruments to be used or recorded in 
our State..."

Tilden would lose the Presidency through the deal in the House of 
Representatives that ended Reconstruction in the South with the 
Presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes. Bigelow was Tilden's friend and his 
campaign manager and advisor in 1876, just after this document was signed.
