Woolten [?], Dr. PHYSICIAN'S HANDWRITTEN PATIENT RECORDS AND NOTES, NEW
YORK-NEW JERSEY AREA, APRIL-OCTOBER, 1934. Original manuscript. 68pp,
written in ink on lined paper + 6 pp of handwritten “table of contents”
with the names of 49 patients. Notebook of tan calf over boards, some edge
chipping. 7.25” x 4.5”. Good condition.
This notebook contains the 1934 records of 54 patients (5 more than the
“contents” pages list), men and women, young and old. Each entry gives the
patient’s full name, age, presenting symptoms, past history (including
childhood diseases, etc.), as well as accounts of each patient’s condition
at each (dated) visit during this time. Most entries include the doctor’s
rough sketches of the patients' lung conditions, observed symptoms and test
results, past treatments by other doctors (especially past biopsies, many
performed by Dr. Irv Goldman), etc. Many of the patients seem to have lung
problems. Sample entries conclude: “to be seen weekly in chest clinic until
admitted to sanitarium” (22-year-old man); “after several weeks, sputum 1-2
cups…blood-streaked once…discharged vs. advice” (50-year-old woman);
“sudden fever, pain below left nipple, cough and yellow sputum”
(17-year-old boy); etc. One 40-year-old man coughing blood is “to have
snake venom.” Other entries include: “tends to fall while walking…speaks
haltingly…memory-impaired” (59-year-old woman); “swallowed splinter of
chicken leg bone” (37-year-old woman); etc. The doctor also notes whether
or not the patient is a heavy smoker, and often the patient’s employment
history, especially if industrial. ~~ Hospitals mentioned where patients
were treated include Israel Zion, Bronx Hospital, and Bayonne Hospital,
indicating that the doctor worked in the New York-New Jersey area. The use
of terms such as “discharged against advice,” etc. would seem to indicate
that he works in a pulmonary clinic. $100.00
