FISHER, M. F. K. ARCHIVE OF 8 TYPED LETTERS SIGNED (TLSs) AND OTHER
MATERIAL. Glen Allen, CA, 1984-1991. Superb collection of 8 typed
letters to a couple she befriended in 1984 variously SIGNED as MFK
Fisher, Mary Frances Fisher, MFKF, but usually Mary Frances, all from
her Glen Allen, CA, home on 8-1/2" x 11" plain paper. The letters trace
the growth of the friendship from the husband's initial contact with
Fisher through his death and the continuing friendship with his wife.
The letters are chock full of wonderful prose-- W.H. Auden said of
Fisher: "I do not know of anyone in the United States today who writes
better prose." Fisher discusses Marseille, hotels and restaurants-- "The
place was fairly clean, and the food was quite good, but not good
enough," and of course, food and books. Fisher also talks about her
sister, a gift sent to her by the correspondents, and travel--"Once I
was in Strasburg from November through April, and I almost froze to
death. We lived in an attic across from the zoo, and I would go over to
look at the birds whose feet were frozen to the ground, and feel free
but too cold to cry about it or them." There are many holograph
corrections and additions by Fisher throughout. Two envelopes are
present along with three stray envelopes, a typed letter from Fisher's
assistant describing how Fisher's voice is almost completely gone, and a
typed recipe on an index card for Chermoula (Moroccan) adapted by
Fisher. Excellent collection in Near Fine condition. (#011224)
