FIRST EDITION. Alexander Lawson was a member of the faculty at the
Rochester Institute of Technology from 1947 to 1977. Lawson administered
the Melbert B. Cary, Jr., Graphic Arts Collection of books at the
Institute. Lawson has received the Goudy Award, the APHA award, among
other citations. This is his best-known work; it is a study of letter
forms, their division and classification into "families" or generic
groupings. This is the first full-scale investigation of typefaces since
D. B. Updike's classic _Printing Types_ of 1922.
