[William Hone (ed.):] The only Full and Genuine Edition. An Accurate Report of the Trial of Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Caroline, before the House of Lords, on a Bill of Pains and Penalties, Charging Her Majesty with a Criminal Intercourse, with a Foreigner named Bartolomo Bergami. With Highly finished Colour'd Engravings, of the Queen and her Ex-Chamberlin [sic]. Containing the evidence in full--the speeches of counsel on both sides--examination of witnesses, by the peers and counsel--debates on various interesting questions connected with the trial--the opinion of the judges thereon--Miss Demont's letters--proceedings on the first, seond [sic] and third readings of the bill--divorce clause, &c. &c. &c. London: Printed by William Hone, Ludgate-Hill, 1821. FIRST EDITION; 8vo (21 cm) in early/period half calf and marbled boards; 494 pp.; with two hand-colored engraved portraits.

Definitive account of the trial of Queen Caroline for adultery, published and edited by one of her most ardent supporters, the irrepressible publisher and pamphleteer William Hone. The divorce proceedings initiated against Caroline by George IV made the queen a cause celebre of reform-minded Whigs, who used her plight as a bludgeon against the king, a former Whig himself, and his Tory administration. See our other auctions this week for additional items related to the life and lively times of George, Prince of Wales, a/k/a the Prince Regent, a/k/a George IV.

Binding with rubbing to the boards, modest wear to the edges and extremities; front joint cracked at the top but the board is secure; title-page with some offsetting from the frontispiece, mild toning to the leaves with a few occasional small spots, otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the small contemporary label of "T. Connolly, Book Seller, 6 Chancery Place, Dublin."
