[Lord John Russell:] Essays, and Sketches of Life and Character. By a Gentleman Who Has Left His Lodgings. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1820. FIRST EDITION; 8vo (21 cm), untrimmed in original publisher's boards with printed spine label; 12, vi, [2], 248 pp.; with 12-pp. publisher's catalogue bound at the front.

The second published work, and the first work of fiction, by Lord Russell, the future prime minister (1846-52, 1865-66). It was preceded the year before by a biography of his ancestor, the 1st Duke of Bedford. A series of social and cultural observations purportedly discovered in the rooms of a missing lodger, included are essays on French vs. British pride, literary taste, theatre, political economy, sports, fame, travel, as well as a short story based on "The Wandering Jew." Front joint professionally repaired, boards a bit bumped and worn, spine darkened and the spine label chipped; foxing to the preliminary leaves of adverts, some light toning and occasional small spots elsewhere, darkening to the untrimmed edges of the text block, else clean and crisp, firmly bound.
