Charles Darwin; Eduard Barbier, trans.: L'Origine des Especes au moyes de la selection naturelle ou La luite pour l'existence dans la nature. Traduit sur l'edition anglaise definitive. Paris: C. Reinwald, 1882. Thick 8vo in period cloth-backed marbled boards; [2], xxi, [1], 588 pp.; with the half-title and leaf of publisher's adverts, folding plate.

Early edition of Barbier's French translation of the "definitive" English edition of On the Origin of Species. Barbier's was the first translation of which Darwin wholly approved. Damp-stain to the last 60 leaves or so, occasional faint damp-stain elsewhere, browning to the folding plate, five leaves with creased top corners, early owner's signature to title-page, gift inscription on front flyleaf, else quite clean and crisp, firmly bound.
