[CURRIER & IVES: CURRIER, Nathaniel] BARBOUR, Gabriel. KIND, KIND AND
GENTLE IS SHE. New York [and elsewhere]: Hewitt & Jaques [and others],
[1837-1841]. Folio (10" x 13") bound in contemporary brown
leather-backed marble boards with a black leather label on the front
cover with the owner's name: Anna Mitchell. A collection of sheet music
featuring only two illustrated covers. One happens to be an early work
by Nathaniel Currier before he began his partnership with Ives. Though
not dated, information gathered from Dichter and Shapiro's EARLY
AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC (page 205) reveals that the publisher's imprint
Hewitt & Jaques, as on this piece, was used between 1837 and 1841.
Nathaniel Currier began his career as a lithographer in 1833, and it was
not until 1857 he became associated with the firm of Currier & Ives. The
image is of a pretty damsel in a bower with a building behind her. There
is a dampstain in the upper left corner that just touches the image.
There are several closed tears, none with loss, the most serious being
about three inches long and extending into the image a little more than
an inch. The other cover is the Fourth Edition of Lord Byron's "And Wilt
Thou Weep When I Am Low?" which has a dampstain in the inner margin and
some foxing in the upper and lower margins. The image is of Byron
standing by the sea. The other printed and manuscript music is in
generally good condition, but there is some extensive dampstaining and
even some mold toward the rear of the volume. Good overall. (#011316)
