*Description*

A REMARKABLE ARCHIVE OF ORIGINAL LETTERS FROM GISELE FREUD TO HER LITERARY
AGENTS, BEING WHAT WE BELIEVE TO BE THE LARGEST ARCHIVE OF GISELE FREUND
LETTERS IN EXISTENCE with approximately 250,000 words authored by Freund --
the equivalent of five novels -- written primarily to Marie Rodell and Joan
Daves. The Archive also includes various original letters from publisher's
to Freund's Literary Agents, file copies of letters from her Literary
Agents to Freund and others, and other materials. This unique Archive
contains references to prominent French artists, writers and intellectuals,
and, of course, to Freund's photography. Most of the letters are either
typed or handwritten in English on Gisele Freund's Paris letterhead, with
many in the French language, a few in German, with several of the letters
having handwritten annotations. [Approximately 120 of the Freund letters
are MANUSCRIPT LETTERS SIGNED.] Original signed letters from Freund are
EXTRAORDINARILY SCARCE AND MANUSCRIPT LETTERS SIGNED FROM FREUD ARE SCARCER
STILL. Excluding this Archive, and as of the date this listing was created,
very few of them are listed on the market. Furthermore, our search of the
World Cat Library system reveals only two small collections. The renowned
French photographer, Gisele Freund, photographed an extensive number of
famous people, particularly writers and artists of the twentieth century,
and took the only known color photograph of James Joyce. Born in Germany,
Freund was a Socialist and a vocal opponent of the Nazis. She fled from
Germany to Paris, where she spent the majority of the rest of her life, and
became a French Citizen. Recognized as one of the great portraitists of the
20th century, Gisele Freund photographed Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf,
James Joyce, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, George Bernard Shaw, T.S. Eliot,
Eva Peron, Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda and many others. Those mentioned
(or whose photographs are mentioned) in this Archive, include James Joyce,
Miguel Angel Asturias, Man Ray, Colette Audry, Andre Malraux, Motherlant,
Thornton Wilder, Vladimir Nabokov, Henri Michaux, Kingsley Amis, Arthur
Koestler, Marcel Marceau, Samuel Beckett, Herman Hesse, William Styron, and
many others. Considered to be one of the world's foremost agents for
serious and intellectual fiction and nonfiction, Joan Daves's clients
included not only the world-renowned Photographer Gisele Freud, but also
included six Nobel Prize winners [Heinrich Boll (1972), Elias Canetti
(1981), Herman Hesse (1946), the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1964),
Nelly Sachs (1966) and Gabriela Mistral (1945) -- five of which won the
Nobel Prize in Literature, and one of which, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr., won the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize (Joan Daves accompanied him to
Stockholm, Sweden where he received the Prize)], as well as Frank O'Connor,
Isaac Babel, Willie Morris, Vaclav Havel, Rachel Carson, and others. Of
Daves, Robert Weil, a senior editor at St. Martin's Press, stated: "''She
was literature. She was a brilliant critic, a brilliant reader. She was
extremely nurturing. She had a social flair as well. She was a great person
to put together people as if she ran a salon in New York which combined the
writers of post-World War II European literature with the needs of American
publishers.'' A REMARKABLE AND RARE ARCHIVE OF ORIGINAL SIGNED LETTERS FROM
GISELE FREUND. RARE INDEED.
