George Cruikshank: The Bottle. In Eight Plates. London: Published for the Artist, by D. Bogue, London; Wiley and Putnam, New York; and J. Sands, Sydney, New South Wales, [1847]. Eight leaves, including title-page; 8 plates, tissue guards. [WITH:] The Drunkard's Children. A Sequel to The Bottle. In Eight Plates. London: Published for the Artist, July 1st, 1848, by David Bogue, 86. Fleet Street, London; John Wiley and G.P. Putnam, New York; and J. Sands, Sydney, New South Wales of may be had "The Bottle", 1848. Eight leaves, including title-page; 8 plates, tissue guards. FIRST EDITIONS. Two volumes, tall folios (40 cm; 15 3/4 in.), stitch-bound as issued, original(?) plain paper wraps. Cohn 194, 195.

Cruikshank's two famous temperance works, vividly executed and relentlessly grim, inspired by Hogarth's Rake's Progress. Rarely found together; the second title is especially uncommon. The Bottle: the wraps, with wear and chipping to the edges, are splitting at the spine but intact; mild toning to the leaves, corners bumped, shallow crease to bottom fore-corners. The Drunkard's Children: wraps tattered and torn, separated at the spine; first and last leaves loose, corners bumped, crease and short edge-tear to the margin of the last leaf.
