 Starr, George. HANDWRITTEN JUSTICE-OF-THE-PEACE TRIAL RECORDS, BRIDGEWATER
TOWNSHIP, WILLIAMS COUNTY, OHIO, 1848-1853. 148pp, folio; detailed entries
on every page, mostly full pages, plus tipped-in slips.  Calf-backed
marbled boards.  Records the particulars of many legal cases: names of the
parties, nature of the cases, settlements, judgments, fees, etc.  Laid in
are a number of miscellaneous notes and receipts.  Judge Starr was assisted
in his efforts by Constable Benjamin Griffith, and later by Constable Milo
Thompson. 12.5" x 7.75".  Very Good condition.
Williams County is in the extreme northwest corner of Ohio. Bridgewater
Township, in the northern part of Williams County, along the Michigan line,
recorded its first settler in 1835, according to Goodspeed's History.
Among the early arrivals in 1838 was George Starr, author of this
manuscript, who here details 101 legal actions. Each trial entry is signed
by George Starr, J.P.  Notices of warrants served are signed by Benjamin
Griffith.  Cases include: J.W.P Groves vs Silvester Snow;  Asa Smith vs
A.S. Willyard (estate of David Mason);  C.W. Mallory vs W.R. Parker;  J.C.
Wilden vs Jacob Hively;  Aron Willyard vs Hiram Covel;  Frederick M.
Champion vs W.H.R. Smith (replevin for one rifle);  Milo Thompson vs
Alexander Hamilton;  Levi Cunningham vs Elias Depuy & John Depuy;  Robert
McDonald vs Milo Thompson;  Hiram Covel vs B.B. Vancourt;  State of Ohio vs
John Barcalow (assault & battery on the person of Joshua Clark);  George
Flint vs William P. Back;  William Rupel vs Elizur Styles;  William Sanders
vs Directors, District No. 3 School District (trespass for building a
school house);  State of Ohio vs Augustus Porter (assault & battery with a
stick on George Porter); State of Ohio vs Elias Depuy (theft of logs);
Curtis Cogswell vs William P. Back;  Peter Ferguson vs Henry Poynter &
Leven Poynter;  A.W. Boynton & Co. vs Joshua Conklin;  John E. Ormsbee vs
Lucius B. Vanwerner (challenging the plaintiff's right to his cattle);  and
many others.  Laid in are 17 documents of various date (summonses, etc.),
written and signed by George Starr, mostly half-page.  $375.00
