Maine, Scarborough / Apthorp, Charles Ward. HANDWRITTEN LAND TRANSFER TO
MATHIAS RICE, PHYSICIAN, AND GEORGE HOIT, BLACKSMITH, NEW YORK, NEW YORK, 8
FEBRUARY 1793. Original manuscript. Small folio, 2.25pp, readable hand,
sepia ink. Apthorp, a resident of New York City, accepts "Sixty pounds
lawful money of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts" in exchange for a tract
of land with buildings in Scarborough "given by Benjamin Milliken to
Nathaniel Wheelwright on the twenty-fifth of January 1763...twenty acres
more or less...Beginning at the South East corner of said Benjamin's
Shop...." Bounded by the house of John Babb, the old marsh road, the widow
Milliken's garden, and the road that leads from Dunston meeting house to
Dunston Landing, &c. Several paragraphs follow, regarding Apthorp's earlier
deal with Wheelwright. Signed as C.W. Apthorp; witnessed by N[?] Bayard and
Nicholas Bayard. Attested on 9 Feb 1793 by Nicholas Bayard, Alderman and
Justice of the Peace. Worn at the folds. 13" x 7.75" Fair.
Charles Ward Apthorp was born at Boston in 1729 and died at Bloomingdale,
NY in 1797. His wife was Mary Apthorp (nee McEvers) and they had several
children. Mathias Rice and George Hoit were Scarborough, Massachusetts
[later Maine] residents. ~~ Situate on the southern coast of Maine,
Scarborough was incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court in 1658,
and remained within the boundaries of the Commonwealth until March 15, 1820
when Maine was granted statehood.  $100.00
