“The Compleat Troller, or, The Art of Trolling, With A Description of
all the Utensils, Instruments, Tackling, and Materials requisite
thereto: With Rules and Directions how to use them. As Also A Brief
Account of most of the Principal Rivers in England. By a Lover of the
Sport”
By Robert Nobbes.
Published in London, printed by T. James for Tho. Holder at the Angel in
Little Britain in 1790 [stated 1682, but this is the 1790 re-issue].
First published in 1682. Although Nobbes' book was not the earliest
English work on fishing, it was one of the most popular, and Nobbes has
been called "the Father of trollers". Republished in 1790 (this edition)
and again in 1805.
Hardcover. 3.5"x6", [17] 78 [2] pages. Several woodcut illustrations in
the text. 1 page list of other books published by Helder on the last
page. Bound in old full leather with gilt dentelles and an elaborately
blindstamped spine. Engraved bookplates of James Walsh and Henry A.
Sherwin, and the ownership label of H.S. Smith; another ownership label
removed from the endpaper. Covers with some wear and rubbing, contents a
bit browned, with a small stain running down the upper portion of the
outer margin. Late 19th century plain brown endpapers. Front endpaper
detached but present. Title page has some neatly inked light red/brown
rules around the margins and underlining the title which actually ends
up looking a bit handsome. $375 -
