First Edition. First London Edition, First Authorized Edition, and First
Separate Edition in four octavo volumes in contemporary full sheep
leather. Lacks ad leaf and leaf with paper labels, as is customary.
State of the portrait without publisher's imprint. Johnson begins with
Abraham Crowley and goes on to discuss John Milton, John Dryden, Joseph
Addison, John Gay, Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, Thomas Gray, and
others. This work is often regarded as the finest and most famous
collection of biographies of English poets ever written. Signature of
Tho. E. Bull on the front endpaper. All but one of the leather labels
lacking. Joints split but tight except on the last volume where the
front cover is cleanly detached. Scattered foxing, some pencil notes.
