Description

An about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, with the second state of the six-page catalogue beginning with "The Beginners of a Nation" (light wear) in a Very Good example of the exceedingly scarce to rare dust jacket (toning, some chipping and wear to the spine ends and panel edges, front panel neatly and mostly reattached to the spine panel with some splitting still showing), SIGNED BY STEPHEN CRANE on a clipped signature affixed to the title page; Stephen Crane's debut collection of short stories. Stephen Crane is best-known for his great novel "The Red Badge of Courage", a tale of the Civil War universally considered to be a classic. As a result of the novel's popularity, the McClure Syndicate contracted Crane to write a series of short stories on Civil War battlefields. Crane agreed on the condition that he be allowed to "visit the battlefield—which I was to describe—at the time of year when it was fought" in connection with his writing of the stories. He visited battlefields in Northern Virginia, including Fredericksburg, and produced five more Civil War tales: "Three Miraculous Soldiers", "The Veteran", "An Indiana Campaign", "The Little Regiment", and "An Episode of War", the first four of which, together with "A Gray Sleeve" and "A Mystery of Heroism", are gathered together in this volume . Notably, "The Veteran" features Henry Fleming, the protagonist of "The Red Badge of Courage", years after the war's end. As Crane died young -- in 1900 at age 28, his signature is quite scarce. [The Crane signature contained in this volume was taken from an incomplete copy of a Limited Edition signed by Crane and remains in a quite bright and fresh condition.] Copies of this work, his debut collection of short stories, in the delicate dust jacket are as scarce as hen's teeth. An about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, second state, in the RARE DUST JACKET, SIGNED BY STEPHEN CRANE.

Comments

[Published October 1896 -- sales of The Red Badge of Courage had fallen off by November 1896 after having slowed before then, leveling off in mid-year. RBOC had 14 printings in 1896 but was not issued again until 1898. Little Regiment was published in 1896, but the number of printings is not known. Two states of the American edition exist.
