First Edition; octavo; pp; v, (iii), 599; blue cloth, top edge stained blue, spine title tile in darker blue lettered in gray; The first printing lacking the scarce jacket, the spine darkened, moderate wear, abrasion at spine foot, else a clean tight copy of a very scarce 20th century American highpoint. The American Jewish literary classic, which was nearly forgotten shortly after publication, to be revived some thirty years later after receiving a front page review in the New York Times Book Review. The life of the lower east side ghetto made brilliant in this first novel by Roth.
