endpaper is a 3-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) from Pickard 
expressing his surprise over the London edition of this book sent to him 
by the recipient of the letter--"The receipt of the London edition of my 
book is the first intimation I have had that such an edition was 
issued"--and comparing it to this American edition. Illustrated with 
plates and a facsimile of Whittier's handwriting. Paper split on hinges 
of second volume but tight with some loss of gilt to the spine. Near
